In My Seed Box For 2026 - Radish

I see these as not really needing a bed of their own but as squatters/ row markers at the end of other vegetables like Parsnips and carrots that take a time to germinate and show where they have been planted.

With good storage conditions Radish seeds can last between 5 - 8 years and with most companies only allowing 2 - 3 years between the packing date and the sow by date, I have seeds for quite a few years to come.

Prices are at the time of purchase and not current.

Suttons - Royal Purple Radish

I've been sent these by Suttons to trial as they are a New variety to Suttons for 2024 sold for £2.49 for 200 seeds. So I'm adding them to my Radish seed collection, as I do love a radish.

The web site page for these Suttons Royal Purple Radish says:-

"Perfectly formed, plump, round radishes up to 5cm in diameter! The large, uniform roots of Radish ‘Royal Purple’ have mildly sweet flesh and a satisfying crunch that will please all radish-lovers! Ready to harvest in just 33 days from sowing, Radish ‘Royal Purple’ is perfect for beginners and budding young gardeners. Height: 20cm (8in). Spread: 10cm (4in).

Sowing Information

Direct sow radish seeds from February to March under glass at a temperature of around 15-20C (59-68F), or from April to August outdoors. Grow radish in a well prepared fertile, moist, free draining seedbed in full sun or semi shade. Sow radish seeds thinly at a depth of 1cm (½in) in drills 15cm (6") apart. When large enough to handle, thin out the seedlings within each row to 2.5cm (1in) apart. Regular sowings made at 4 week intervals will ensure a steady supply of radishes throughout the season. Radish plants are quick growing and can be used for intercropping between other slower growing vegetables such as parsnips. Where space is limited, growing radish in patio containers will also produce a worthwhile crop."

In My Seed Box For 2024 - Radish

I see these as not really needing a bed of their own but as squatters/ row markers at the end of other vegetables like Parsnips and carrots that take a time to germinate and show where they have been planted. I have two square foot gardening beds there feature surrounding the solitary items at the back that are vertical growers see posting here re square foot garden beds layouts.

With good storage conditions Radish seeds can last between 5 - 8 years and with most companies only allowing 2 - 3 years between the packing date and the sow by date, I have seeds for quite a few years to come.

Mr Fothergill's - Radish Whitella F1

NEW to Mr Fothergill's - Whitella F1 Radish - Item Code 38215 - 300 Seeds - £2.40

The Mr Fothergills web site says "Premium quality, crisp tasty roots. This fast-growing variety is ideal for seasonal growing. Slow to turn woody, it’s highly trusted and performed strongly on our trials."

Now I got this radish because I have grown white radishes before and quite liked them. Doing a little digging on the internet, I have found out that Whitella F1 is the first white radish hybrid on the market.

Average to long strong leaves, good leaf attachment. Clear white bulb colour. Round uniform bulbs. Cross section diameter up to 35 mm. Rapidly growing and very productive variety. High tolerance to splitting and drying out (except in cold conditions).

Good internal quality. Good and long storage life and storing quality. High resistance against false mildew on foliage and bulb.

High Fusarium ox resistance. Suitable for bunching. Growing in greenhouse: year-round sowing is possible, but not during hot summers (long leaf) and cold winters (risk of splitting).

Beautiful white radish with good uniformity and internal quality. With stress it may develop a faint pink cap near the stem attachment but remains attractive. With medium to tall tops.

Hydrating Coco Coir & Bloody Foxes!

A couple of hours on the plot today hydrating Coco Coir, tidying up the shed, fixing the hook and eye on the shed door, sowing Radishes and hating the bloody foxes that have damaged the grapevine I've only just planted.

One daff nearly dead and one tulip open, unimpressed

The grapevine as supplied and planted

What's left of the grapevine after the Bast*&d Fox has done a Watusi on the bed and broken the two vines one at the grafting point with the root stock. I just hope they have not killed the vine.

Mesh panel to protect what is left of the grapevine, I'm so gutted and fox hating at the moment

Hook and Eye added to the shed door

Coco Coir hydrated and stored in the dustbin bought for the purpose ready for using in the Square Foot Gardening Bed 1

Old seeds left out for the robins and other birds

Radishes sown in the high level trug.

Cover fitted but trug a bit warped so brick put on the weight it down.
