Marshalls Garden Little Book of Seeds Vol V 2025

One of the rewards for being an Allotment and Gardening Blogger is that one acknowledged as being Gardening Press, and as such we get press releases and early copies of catalogues, brochures and seeds to trial, in addition to the annual invites to the Gardening Press Event in London each year.

I have to say the 2025 version of the Little Book Of Seeds is as informative as usual, but for 2025 Marshalls have a few new initiatives they are implementing.

They are introducing The Enhanced Collection that encompasses some tried and tested favourite varieties of vegetable seeds that most of us have enjoyed growing but with improvements to make grown crops eve more successful.

These improvements or as they say in their Little Book Of Seeds, Benefits include improved yields, greater disease resistance, improved flavour, improved vigour and strength and much more. I'm not sure what the much more are apart from marketing terms, but I will take the identifiable benefits as they are always useful to have.

There is a symbol throughout the catalogue and an example of four varieties on page 6, and the four seed packs sent to me to trial from The Enhanced Collection are shown in the photo at the top of this article. The link above takes you to where you can find out more about the contents of this collection and what seeds you might want to try next year.

Inside the front page there is a notification that for 2025 Marshalls are introducing a new lower P&P rate of just £1.95 for `seed only' orders.

On Page 3 no naked pin-up, but an offer to add a seed wheel of your choice that normally retails at £4.99 that can be added to a any order for just £1 using code WHEEL when ordering online. I have two version of this wheel for vegetables of different diameters and ages in my potting shed on the allotment.

Between pages 34 & 35 is a Seed Sowing Calendar of what seeds to plant each month that is really useful for new allotment owners, and it's a common question on many Facebook gardening groups.

I will be looking at the catalogue and producing a post about all the new varieties for 2025 in early January.

I will be posting more about the Little Book Of Seeds in the coming days, especially if its raining and I cant get down to the allotment.

Spring Catalogues

It's that time of year when I start looking at the Spring Catalogue's to see what's new and interesting and what I may want to trial later in the year. The post-it tags help me find all the New varieties added and that I may be interested in.

What else is there to do when it gets dark so early and the weather prevents you getting down to the allotment early evening?

Do you like to try out new varieties or perhaps something you have never tried growing before each year ?

I have reached out to T&M's Public Relations to find out, if the above were new for the 2022 season or are also NEW above the 10 listed on pages 22 & 23 for 2023?

I do like to trial a number of new varieties each year, along with some more traditional heritage varieties that I know will provide me with good food for my family, friends and Neighbours.

Currently I'm gathering information from Thompson & Morgan, Suttons, Dobies, D.T.Brown and Mr Fothergills & Marshalls to research what I will be selecting to trial in 2023.

As always there are a few new items that one company has that another had last year or in previous years like the Crimson Crush F1 tomato which for me has been a standard since I was sent a trial plant in 2015 the year before the seeds became commercially available for all.

New Varieties from D.T.Brown

Five new varieties of seeds from D.T.Brown plus the free one they give you with every seed order this year it's Pak Choi.

The first clubroot resistant Savoy cabbage with great tasting leaves forming large, heavy heads. Also resistant to ringspot and white rust for consistently high-quality crops of large savoy cabbages weighing between 1.5kg-2kg each.

The web site says "leaves are attractive and are of good colour and flavour." I agree with the colour and I'm looking forward to finding out about the flavour. I love the idea that I don't have to worry about clubroot, so far I have been lucky but prevention is better than cure.

A premium carrot with excellent vigour, for quick crops of smooth skinned roots with deep colour and great flavour. Slow to bolt, for a longer harvest period.

The well flavoured roots show good uniformity with attractive, well attached foliage which is well suited to bunching.

Another variety for me to try in the cut down water butt to get Bugs Bunny type carrots.

A growers’ favourite for many years, little gem has always been a plot staple for us. This high-quality little gem type produces crops of outstanding reliability and flavour.

The compact growth makes it a great choice for growing where space is limited and will perform well in patio containers. When harvested the leaves are perfect for adding crunch to salads.

The world's first downy mildew resistant variety, for reliable crops of delicious red globe onions. Expect excellent yields of mild tasting, large red bulbs which store very well when kept in cool, dark and dry conditions.

The bulbs are of good quality and have a mellow flavour which is well suited for serving in summer salads.

The attractive, compact and bushy plants are highly productive and a great choice for those with smaller growing spaces. The plants are well suited to containers, balconies and sheltered patios.

This variety is heavy cropping, producing good numbers of sweet and juicy, red peppers. A perfect variety for containers on a sunny sheltered patio.

Free Trial Pack Pak Choi. - Although there is an item code on the pack of seeds, there is no page on the web site about the Free pack of seeds they are giving away this year. There are however two mentions in the 2022 Spring Catalogue.

The D.T.Brown Garden Equipment Catalogue Spring 2022 came with my seeds along with a seed label for each pack.

I know that this information is scattered around in the main catalogue, but it was nice to take it and have it to read whilst waiting in the doctors surgery having got an actual physical appointment after nearly two years.

And yes! I have found something in it that I'm going to order.

D.T.Brown Spring 2022 Catalogue

Now it has to be said I like most allotmenteers love receiving seed catalogues during the Winter months to flick through and select those varieties I want to grow in Spring.

I love the way the seed companies appear to be upping their game with better and more interesting catalogues in the last couple of years, and the D.T.Brown full Spring 2022 Premium Seed and Plants catalogue with its 290 pages does not disappoint.

The retro look of the cover and the period images internally reinforce that this is a company Established in 1908 some six years before the first World War and Edward the VII was King of Britain.

In the middle of the Catalogue you will find a 12 page Growing Record which you can if really careful remove from the catalogue.

There is also a guild as to how to use the Growing Record, but should you wish to keep your catalogue in pristine condition you can download the download an adobe pdf copy of the Growing Record (dtbrownseeds.co.uk) and print out.

There are also links files for additional pages.

Marshalls Autumn Catalogue

Marshalls Autumn Catalogue dropped into my letterbox today. In the inside cover there is a notification

Coming Soon!

At Marshalls we've been passionate about seeds for over 75 years, and this year we are proud our first ever ........

This is the catalogue that I received and reviewed in December 2020

I think Marshalls should have updated the image or at least the year to 2022 for next year or have edited out the Coming Soon! as its been available since December 2020.

The good news is that there is information about New Varieties of Onions, Garlic Potatoes, Organic Potatoes, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Leeks, Spring Cabbage, peas, spinach in the Autumn Catalogue.

I will be keeping a look out for the Marshalls 2022 Little Book of Seeds and I'm hoping it will arrive in December again as I will be looking at the new varieties and deciding what I will be having a bash at in 2022.

Gift In Retro Seed Catalogue

Now it has to be said I like most allotmenteers love receiving seed catalogues during the Winter months to flick through and a couple or years ago during my daily treatments when I was put on an antibiotics drip for Cellulitis they gave me something to read and look at in depth whilst you wait for the magic to happen and the antibiotics to get into your veins each day.

I love the way the seed companies appear to be upping their game in 2021 with better and more interesting catalogues and the D.T.Brown full Spring 2021 Premium Seed and Plants catalogue with its 274 pages does not disappoint.

The retro look of the cover and the period images internally reinforce that this is a company Established in 1908 some six years before the first World War and Edward the VII was King of Britain.

In the middle of the Catalogue you will find a 12 page Growing Record which you can if really careful remove from the catalogue.

Marshalls Little Book Of Seeds 2021

Is not so little it Measures 170mm wide 248mm deep and 9mm or 198 Pages thick. So far this is my favourite seed brochure that I have looked at in the last three months!

On the back of the front cover we are informed that Marshalls Garden have been passionate about seeds for over 70 years and for the first time ever they have brought together their range of fruit, vegetables , flowers and houseplant seeds together in one place to make it easy for the customers to browse and plan for the year ahead

The layout of this brochure or catalogue has been well thought out and is a total redesign on the previous catalogues and personally I hope that Marshalls will maintain this format following their rebranding in 2020.  I can’t wait to see how they have improved the information on the seed packets for 2021 as they were already one of the most informative packs.

The catalogue includes helpful sowing and growing tips for individual varieties, and kicks off on page 6 through to 9 with photos of the 55 New vegetables seeds added to the Marshalls range. Each photo has the page number within the brochure where more information can be found.

This on its own will save me hours, as I will not have to add post-it tags to the brochure on every page that has a New Variety. I can quickly determine which ones I want to look at in closer detail, perhaps visit the web page for the variety and order to add to my seed box collection for 2021.

Now research says that men don’t like using index pages and systems when looking for information, however women are more likely to use the index. Perhaps because of my choice of profession or could be I'm in touch with my feminine side, but I love and index and the one provided between pages 192 and 197 is split between Vegetable Seed A-Z Index and Flower Seed A-Z Index, giving the Variety Name, if NEW, Order Code Quantity of Seeds, Price and Page Number for more information.

Page 198 is a Notes page for your growing notes or memory joggers.

Of the 55 New Vegetable seeds there are 12 New Tomatoes that have been added to the range for 2021 and all can be seen on page 9. The tomato section of the catalogue can be found from page 86 to 92, the first two pages covers everything a new gardener/grower or allotment holder needs to know about Tomatoes i.e. Where to Grow, How To Grow, When to Plant, Choosing Your Tomato, Types of Tomato, difference between Cordon & Bush, Pests & Diseases, How to Care, Training Your Plants, When to Harvest.

The informative guidance is supplied at the introduction to each variety of vegetable and then there are Top Tips scattered throughout the Little book of Seeds which actually makes it a great little reference document.

Within the envelope when when your Little Book of Seeds arrives are a January Offers flyer and an order form with the delivery window and charges and Terms and Conditions plus a really handy laminated card with six push out book marks to mark the pages of your
favourite varieties.

D.T.Browns Autumn 2020 Catalogue

With the Autumnal Equinox in the UK being today it's fitting that the D.T.Brown Autumn 2020 Catalogue drops through the letterbox.

246 Pages of gardening porn with a List of what's "In This Issue" on page 3 that informs me that New Vegetables seeds for 2021 can be found on pages 32-39 and that a vegetable seed index can be found on pages 238-241
