Long Lasting Propagation Trays


I first encountered Containerwise back in 2019 I set about looking for alternatives to the flimsy plastic modules available and purchased a selection of what was then available from Containerwise. I have been using all the various shapes and sizes above annually, since then, I did also manage to buy a number of their trays second hand, a couple of years later. 

I blogged about Containerwise.co.uk in 2020 and why I thought investing in heavy duty plastic that was going to last was better that purchasing flimsy tray modules, and I have been proved to be right, I'm still using them annually and for a while recently it looked like they were going to outlast me!  

In 2019 I spoke to David Meek about smaller trays, and was informed that it was just not economically viable, and the cost of setting up the moulds was prohibitive. Then the king of magic cardboard and compost, Charles Dowding the ‘no dig’ gardening specialist went into partnership with Containerwise in early 2020, and the magic happened. 

Charles having been aware of Containerwises long-life propagation trays for a number of years and using their 77L trays, was seeking smaller trays which was long-life, UV stabilised and economical on compost, whilst producing high quality seedlings/plants. The result? the CD60 tray and the Charles Dowding range was born

Wanting smaller trays to play with as my stock of window cill size propagator size modules are getting brittle and quite frankly knackered, I looked at the Charles Dowding Range and saw that I could purchase a starter kit saving just over £6 on the individual items  


The young kid on the block Huw Richards who just like star treks William Ryker grew a beard to make him look older, and has been a rising star on the gardening front and is now an author of many books and has a very popular YouTube channel also needed his own propagation trays which come in two cell configurations: HR10 with 10 cells and HR20 with 20 cells. Like Containerwise's popular 40L seed trays, the HR range have anti-spiral root ribs to assist air-pruning and support robust seedling growth.  


Why did I not buy the Huw Richards Starter Pack ?  Shear number of cells I guess, 60 cells in Huws and 120 cells in Charles, that's not to say I will not be tempted to treat myself to a Huw Richards Starter Pack at some time in the future.

HD Plastic 15 Cell (3 x 5) Modules

Patch Seed Potatoes are selling a box of 20 number 15 Cell (3 x 5) Containerwise Second hand heavy duty modules for £30 and £8.0 Delivery to the UK which brings the cost of the £4.25 trays down to just below £1.50 each.

Actually although there web site says 20 they have been shipping 21 trays as it fills the box better but that one additional tray is likely to have a defect of some description.  


I tend to use the flimsy15 cell trays like the one on the left in the photo above to hold vending machine cups that I grow in which makes watering from the bottom and transportation easier.  

As you can see the Heavy Duty Plastic module fits into a standard tray easily and actually offers more support to the vending machine cups than it's flimsy neighbour. 

Yes they are second hand and are a little bit dusty and dirty, but they have been used once for potato breeding are are structurally still perfect, they only need a wash over before using, and you are getting them at less than half price. 

I'm on no commission just happy to share a bargain with fellow growers.

More CHM Modules



Now I did say back in July 2019 that now that I have an additional half plot that I may have to buy some more of the durable Heavy Duty plastic modules from CHM


I did ask CHM about the possibility of a tray in between the 77L (30x30mm) and 40L, (42x42mm) but it appears that a moulding tool to produce a new tray would cost somewhere between £20,000 to £30,000. So it isn’t something they can do without a lot of thought and consideration.

What is your preferred module size? let me know in the comments below.

I bought another 8 trays 6x40L Shallow and 2x77L Shallow and it cost £38 with the VAT not including the delivery cost which was £6.99 for that quantity of goods. The cost of the trays depend upon the quantity purchased

Yes those that noticed there are 9 trays in the picture so there is one old one but it makes for a much better balanced photo.

Germination Is Happening

Seeing the first Parsnip leaves I need to get those parsnips in loo rolls down to the allotment and into the ground later today if at all possible or the roots will have already made it to the bottom of the loo roll.
The tomatoes have germinated a lot faster than I thought they were going too. Thinking ahead a little, I need to negotiate with my Little Triffid the storing of 77 small tomato plants in vending machine cups in the house until the weather warms up and they can go in the unheated Space saver greenhouse, or clear the brick shed and set up the external Grow Station. In fact that sounds a whole lot easier that negotiating with the wife.
Looking at that tray of tomato seedlings I need to make a plug extraction tool for that size module as I don't have one at the moment. Here is one that I made for a larger module tray.
The base is a timber bed slat and the dowels are wood glued in the holes
Extraction tool in place.

Radish In Modules Sown

It's time for me to get some Radish started in modules. Here is a very informative video by Charles Dowding and this is how I'm sowing and growing them this year. With what's happening in the shops these days getting some early starts is a must.

Sow in Module 5 x 8 40 Cell module tray 
Multi Purpose Compost press down
Sow average 4 seeds per cell. 
Cover with layer of MPC
Water 
Place in warm sunny location
Germination in two weeks better with warmth
Planted out 3 weeks after sowing
Early planting or Radish not so hot (But there again I like them with a bite)



I've sown a CMH Containerwise Materials Handling 40L shallow long life tray propagation tray of 20 cells worth of Thompson & Morgan Scarlet Globe and 20 Cells of Flamboyant 3. Seed were best by 2019 so I went for 5 - 6 seeds per cell. 




Radish now in the second Grow Station for the next 7 - 14 days, looking at the first grow station there are about 6 tomato seedlings showing already.

Heavy Duty Plastic Tray Modules



There is a lot of pressure these days to reduce the use plastics, we see what’s happening in the oceans and on our beaches and in the countryside and I for one was brought up not to litter and I hate to see it happening. Supermarkets are being pressured to look at alternatives to supplying products in plastic containers and bags.

Gardening programs, magazines and gardening forums are talking about the estimated 500 million plant pots and seed trays are sold every year and that the majority are sent to landfill or incinerated, with very little is recycled. A large quantity of fossil fuel is used in the production of plastic pots, which take around 500 years to decompose.

It’s suggested by many that you just reduce the amount of plastic you use by simply not buying it. Then they tell you that’s It’s not as hard to avoid as you may think, and that there are a growing number of non-plastic alternatives for tools, plant pots and other materials.

The thing is I’ve been there and tried those, I’ve made paper pots and used and continue to use the cardboard toilet roll tubes even if they do get a little mouldy in use for Starting off runner beans etc. I could look into buying biodegradable pots made using materials such as coir (from coconut husks), wood chips, rice husks and even seaweed, I've tried some of those and didn't get on with them they tend to suck the moisture out of the compost in the pot.

Terracotta is nice but its costly, bulky and prone to damage. I must admit I have not really looked into Vipot which according to Alys Fowler in a post on Friends of the Earth says “they look and feel like regular pots but are plastic-free, if cared for they can last several years. When they do finally crack, they can go straight on to the compost.” So one has to ask just how long will they take to degrade if they will last several years before cracking? 
Personally I prefer taking good care of existing plastic items as it’s a good way to ensure I don’t have to keep buying it, because you can reuse it for several years.



For the last seven years I have been using vending machine cups that I use a soldering iron to make two drainage holes in. I wash the vending machine cups and stack them ready for use the following year. When in use these stand in 15 cell modules in good quality seed trays in my space saver or Norfolk greenhouse.


 I have tried growing in modules from garden centres, Wilko, B&Q etc for smaller items but the modules are so flimsy they normally can’t be used more than once and that’s why I used the vending machine cups in the first place and have now started to look for more heavy duty alternatives and smaller modules.


In 2014 I managed to pick up some second hand heavy duty very small cell propagation seed modules from a nursery off ebay and I ended up cutting them down to fit my window cill propagator and mini Ikea greenhouse and to fit standard seed trays, these get looked after washed and stacked away and reused each year.

In March 2018 I purchased an Agralan Propagator which as a plug plant bottom section with a built in watering tray and extraction tool. I liked it so much that I ended up buying another the same year. I would have liked to see what the design change was, and I was informed I would get one to play with from Agralan at the Gardening Press event but it never materialised. 
I had some flexi pots that were actually made from recycled material and I’ve been using those for starting off my sweetcorn each year, but those are now finally giving up the ghost and each year I end up with less and less of them, so I need to look for alternatives
So In 2019 I set about looking for some heavy duty durable, robust, plastic modules to use and bought them from a company called CMH Containerwise Materials Handling
Their range of Materials Handling Products and Plastic Storage Systems cover a wide range of industries from horticulture/agriculture, food and general industry. Their number one aim is to provide an extensive range of plastic materials handling products that not only save their customers time and money, but that also offer an exceptional life span.
Their range of injection moulded long-life Propagation trays are suitable for all Horticultural sectors, from Bedding Plants / Ornamentals, Vegetables, Nursery Stock and Shrubs & trees.They supply module/ propagation trays in a large range of sizes and cell volumes but these can be basically broken down into the following categories:


Their products are designed to give in excess of 10 years trouble free use and they note on their web pages that trays produced 15 years ago are still giving good service today, which ticks my robust and durable boxes. 

There are no prices for items on their web site because their customers are large commercial organisations rather than domestic, and they apply quantity discount, however following my email asking if they would sell to domestic clients, I received the following reply that stated:

“In recent months, with the attention given to single use plastics and with a degree of promotional activity on YouTube through Charles Downing and Huw Richards we have had a very positive response to our range of trays. Many of the enquiries we received were small, 5 trays, 10 trays being typical which didn’t cover the minimum order level (£50+vat) . 

As a result of this number of small enquiries we felt morally obliged to supply, after all, if “small growers” were being positive, we should help them. Consequently, we have waived the minimum charge now with a minimum tray quantity of 5 units which can be mixed across the range. I have attached a price list for the most popular sizes across 2 different tray footprints. As you will see they start at £3.95 each plus P&P and Vat.”

They also sent me a domestic rate price list based in a minimum order of 5 units. Having already purchased small 20mm nursery sized propagator trays in 2014 my attention was on the normal seed tray sizes 350 x 215mm Shallow and 350 x 215mm Deep Cell Trays. I screen captured the styles and looked at each page and marked up the cell size, depth and drainage hole size to help me make a decision what to buy. Below is a neat version that may be of some assistance other wise it's a lot of clicking in and out of pages to find the information on their web site


I've ended up buying six Shallow trays and 3 Deep trays that I'm hoping will serve me well for however many years I have left to tend my allotment. Below are the other trays that they will sell to domestic customers

Plug Plant Extraction Tool or jig Mk II

Way back in February 2015 I made this simple Module Seed Extraction Tool of Jig up to assist in getting the seedlings out of the 20mm x 20mm x 30mm deep nursery module trays I had bought second hand off ebay, I cut the large trays down to full half and quarter trays and wanted a fast way of extracting a row of plug plants from the trays. 


Photos above is the jig primed for use and below the guide module in the closed position


Making 

1) Take one bed slat offcut from another project.
2) Put elastic band on drill the same dia as the dowel at half the thickness of the wood as a stop.
3) Mark the holes at the bottom of the seed modules along the wood.
4) Drill the holes as vertical as possible as I only have a hand drill.
5) Cut the dowels to a length that is half the depth of the module plus the depth of the holes in the base.
6) Wood glue the dowels in place.

Using

1) Move the single strip of module up to the top of the dowels.
2) offer the tray on top of the strip of module on the jig.
3) lower the tray.
4) The seedling plugs are pushed out of the module from the bottom.

Well that's was the theory, and when it came time to remove the onions grown from seed for potting on I used the jig and it worked. 

Fast forward four and a half years and I'm at it again only this time making a Plant Plug Extraction Tool for my new CMH Containerwise Materials  Heavy Duty 77L Shallow Long-Life Propagation Trays  one of which has load of Beetroot Plug Plants that will be going into a bed on the allotment this weekend. 


Below is the jig un-assembled 



Making

1) Take one bed slat from the timber store and cut to required lenght.
2) I bought a 12mm timber drill bit and some 12mm diameter timber doweling. 
3) Marked the holes at the bottom of the seed modules along the wood.
4) Drill the holes as vertical as possible as I only have a hand drill to a depth of approx 5mm.
5) Cut the dowels to a length of 25mm 
6) Wood glue the dowels in place.



And thus the MKII Plug Plant Extraction Tool or Jig is born and will be ready for use as soon as the wood glue is dry. I do have enough dowel to make more extraction tools for different tray configurations I have bought or perhaps even consider making one that does all the 77L Shallow tray in one go, now there is a project for the Winter.

Beetroot Plug Plants


I used one of my new CMH Containerwise Materials  Heavy Duty 77L Shallow Long-Life Propagation Tray  to grow a load of Beetroot Plug Plants and they will be going into a bed on the allotment this weekend. 

I've been out and bought some timber dowel to make an extraction tool to make life a little easier getting the plug plants out of the tray.

Health wise for me this year has been a disaster and as a result I was too late for everything and I have given up on getting the usual 22 tomatoes in the back garden, which is a shame as I have some gadgets and product to trail, and a load of heritage plants that died as a result of the heatwave and my lack of mobility. The gadgets and products will have to be played with next year but I will post about them shortly.



The new Greenhouse on the plot is only half erected and so I have decided just to continue with Micro, Mini and Dwarf tomatoes in the Space Saver Greenhouse in the back garden for this year, and the crop will basically form my contribution to the various seed circles I belong too, and replenish my seed bank.

77L Shallow Long-Life Propagation Tray


If you follow my blog then you will have read on the post Heavy Duty Plastic Tray Modules, that I have been looking for alternatives to the weak plastic tray modules that I have been using and that I have to replace on a regular basis in order to reduce the amount of non recyclable plastic I use, and I found a company called CMH Containerwise Materials Handling who make heavy duty robust plastic modules that will last at least 10 years and they have customers still using their products 15 years or more after purchase.

The tray above is their 77L Shallow Long-Life Propagation Tray it has 7 rows of 11 cells that are 30mm x 30mm and the tray depth is 50mm and for me as I have a Norfolk Space Saver Greenhouse it's important that the module is 350mm x 215mm or a normal tray size and will fit inside a standard tray.     


Originally I only bought one of this tray size, but having now received all my trays from CMH and thinking a little more about how I want to grow next year, I have purchased a few more.   


As hopefully you can see from the photographs above these trays are engineered and made to last and as I have had a Beetroot crop failure this year either because this year I sowed directly or the quality of the seed, the slugs and snail or the extreme weather we have had I'm reverting to starting the beets off in modules. Historically I sowed into vending machine cups but I'm using these modules to start off plug plants that I can move up to bigger containers or perhaps just sow directly.  


As you can see the module is a snug fit in the standard tray 


And here it is once watered in and placed in the Norfolk Space Saver Greenhouse seed tray racking system.
