Potatoes In Buckets

Sunday morning on the allotment, mixing compost and coir with a little potato fertiliser for four buckets of three different varieties of first early spuds with four number in square flower buckets topped off with the bottom of baking trays to stop the fox from digging them out and undoing all my hard work. A thank you to Daughters Emma and Kelly and son-in-law Andy for assisting me getting a load more paving blocks down to the allotment late afternoon.

Coir Block in trug before breaking it down with the paving weeder and adding the Wickes New Multi-Purpose Compost and the potato fertiliser 


Wickes New Peat Free Multi Purpose Compost looked good but then I read it has coir in there anyway! no information about what percentage is added but it would be interesting to know.

According to the back of the sack on a scale of 1 (Low) to 9 (High) for Nutrients this compost is a 6-7 and contains the right level of balanced food with which to nourish plants for up to 4 or 5 weeks after planting, good thing I laced it with slow release potato fertiliser.


600mm long Power Planter 75mm auger made fast work of mixing the potato slow release fertiliser that was sprinkled on top and the coir and Wickes compost. Mixing loose coir and compost is the one job I will do with a drill without a steadying handle, plus I forgot to take the Ryobi drill with me.

A Meerkat has appeared on the plot on a hillock of woodchips near the entrance!


The Malling Juno Raspberries (Spring) from D.T.Brown are taking off there are still a couple that look like dead twigs but I'm hoping all 6 in each variety all take.

Hose Trenching & Bed Frame Cutting

 




I used the two foot long 3" diameter power planter to drill a number of holes in the ground from the corner of the water tank and tap cutting across the main path at an angle to the corner of my plot.






I fixed the hose and then cable tied the hose to the pipe supplying the water to the tank and tap so that when it's unattached it will not flop down and get lost in the long grass that grows around the tank . The trench was cleaned out . bottomed out with a trowel and the hose dropped inside the trench.









The hose was pressurised so that it didn't get squashed during the backfilling process and gradually the hose was buried in the bottom of the 75mm shallow trench.






My trusty Ryobi drill and 75mm (3") by 600mm or 2 foot long Power Planter auger which made light work of doing this and saved me having to bed down or get down using the shorter bit that I also have. If you ever get a Power Planter make sure you have a drill with the stabilising handle.




The soil was brushed back into the trench and then I used the hose to wash the remainder of the excavated soil back into the trench. The water will assist in reconsolidating the soil around the hose, which was still pressurised. I will scatter some grass seed and some compost over the trench to heal the scar I have made in the main path and within a few months no one will know the hose is there.





Tulips giving a flash of colour and a source of pollen for the bees that are now awake and out and about. Many of the daffs have come up blind and I have no idea why?


I moved the painted timbers for SFG Bed 2 and placed on SFG Bed 1 and then proceeded to cut the timbers for SFG Bed 3. There are nail plates that need removing and the timbers need de nailing and then painting but at least they are now cut to size. The timbers stacked at the rear left are for the solar tunnel/ Superdome bed.


Yep one timber is deeper than the rest but I will just loose that in the ground when I assemble and install. The timber stacked up to the side of SFG Bed 1 is mainly scaffold boards and are thus 38mm and not 50mm thick but will do for small beds in the corner of the plot.

View looking down plot 1 the timber that was over the beds on the left has now been sorted into those required for the solar tent bed which will be 3.2m the length of my longest timbers x 0.9m. Its amazing how much growth the green manure has made in the last week. I really need to cut and drop within the next 7 - 10 days before it goes to seed.


It's nice seeing the vision in my mind gradually becoming a reality. many bees and wasps drinking from the water held by the yellow tarps as it was quite warm on the plot today.

Scaffold Poles in The Raspberry Beds


I arrived at the allotment at 7:30 after clearing the ice off the windscreen, it was 9C when I went to bed at around 11pm I was not expecting frost and I had not covered the chitting spuds in the Space Saver Greenhouse. Note to self check those little dudes out!

There was a mist over the plot and a file on one of the plot was still smouldering and the smoke was hitting the mist and with the sun coming up over the buildings on the boundary it looked just like a graveyard scene from an old horror movie.

Frost was on everything including the green manure. It looks as if the plot fox is now bedding down of an evening on this bed looking at the recess that has been getting more consolidated over the last week.


Painting and doing anything to the cut timbers for the beds was out of the question until the sun had thawed them, so I started off by doing a little more digging of the square foot garden bed.

As I started working my way back I looked at the materials stored in this corner and thought, I may as well clear some of this out of the way, so the long timbers were moved to behind the Dalek army and the scaffold poles that were under the yellow tarp were moved out which distracted me from digging and weeding.

I had noticed a few visits ago that some weeds were starting to grow in the raspberry beds and now I had scaffold pole out and exposed I popped to the car and got my Ryobi drill and long Power Planter Auger and set about drilling some 600mm deep holes in the ends of the beds and installing the scaffold tube standards. (A standard is the term for a vertical tube)

The 600mm x 600mm Rhubarb beds were relocated on the 4th Raspberry beds, which as yet don't have any Raspberry plants in and holes in the ground, sorta 75mm diameter and round were drilled or angered out using the Power Planter and Ryobi Drill


I have to say that I love the Power Planter range of Augers. The one in the photo is the 3"x 24 Extended length Bulb & Bedding Plant Auger

I'm going to move the bulbs in the green to along the path between plot 1 and Plot 2 and the smaller Power Planter bits like the 207 and 307 Models are ideal for that. I also have to form a trench from the corner of the plot to the tap and water butt which I will use the Power Planter 312 deep cultivating bit for.

I weeded the Raspberry beds and then made a couple of trips to the wood chip heap in the drop off and pick up area and cover the beds in about 25mm of the the pine woodchip mulch.

I was going to move the paving slabs that have been stacked wither side of the shed door, but they are 400mm square and not 450mm like the rest of the slabs on the main path on plot 1. There were two 600mm square slabs that I have placed at the corner of the shed that infill that area a little too well and I need to move the slabs under the extension to the shed about 5mm for a perfect fit.

The slabs need some levelling bit it looks as if I will use them for a small paved area in front of the shed and as a secondary link to the main path to the allotment entrance. Bottom line is I need to keep an eye out on freecycle for some more 450mm or 600mm slabs so that I can have a paved path from the entrance. I may have to steal some slabs from secondary paths on plot 1A to achieve that faster and then replace.

Cordless Lawn Mowers - Buyers Guild Part 2

As I said in the Cordless Lawn Mowers Buyers Guide Part 1, with everything you purchase in life, it’s the Features & Benefit against the Cost that give you the final Incentive Merit that ultimately makes you decide either to purchase or to walk away from a certain product, or to focus on a particular make or model.

Before buying a battery-powered mower, you need to take some factors into consideration in order to make the right choice for you, remember everyone is different and a "Feature" can have a number of different "Benefits" to different people. A hatchback car has a single feature but a different benefit to a dog owner and someone who like to play golf.     

1. Cutting Width and Height

It is very important for you to consider the cutting width and height of the push mower you want to buy. Smaller cutting width means you will have to do more passes before completing the mowing process, but it also normally means a lighter machine as there is a correlation between width and weight.

One of the advantages of a machine with a smaller cutting width is that it is easier to manoeuvre, and normally lighter. Battery-powered mowers with larger cutting width will require a few passes before completing your job. However, they are not as easy to manoeuvre, or lift.
Majority of push mowers in today’s world come with adjustable height setting so that you can make a choice. You need to consider the ease of changing height settings and possible heights that can be set. Height settings normally range between 3 and 7 different heights, and a height range of somewhere between 20mm to 80mm.
  
2. Choosing the Right Battery

The type of battery used is very important in a cordless quiet lawnmower. This goes a long way in determining the cutting time that will be experienced. Best cordless lawn mowers come with lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries, nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries or lead-acid batteries. Lithium-battery cordless mowers are more popular.

You need to consider the capacity of the battery as this will determine its runtime. A battery with a higher capacity will surely have a higher runtime when compared to one with a lower capacity. The time taken to charge the battery should also be considered – the faster, the better. So the cut area from a single charge is fairly important to determine, unfortunately I have found that not all companies will disclose this information on their web sites
A cordless mower gives you the freedom of a petrol driven mower by using two types of batteries: lead-acid batteries and lithium-ion batteries.

Both of them are available with a power of anywhere between 18V to 120V. Higher the volts, better will be the coverage capacity, durability and runtime of a battery. Li-ion batteries can hold the charge for a longer duration and are considered better than lead acids. Some of the lithium-ion batteries can be recharged up to 100 cycles. The other consideration when looking at a battery is the Amp Hour (AH or Ah) specification which provides a measurement of battery capacity. It is an indication of how much energy can be stored by the battery. A typical Amp Hour specification might read, "100 AH @ 20HR".

Figures below are for Cuting Area based on the Ah of the battery used on a 48V 41cm Greenworks Cordless Lawnmower

Rec. Cutting Area (2Ah) = 275 m2
Rec. Cutting Area (4Ah) = 550 m2
Rec. Cutting Area (6Ah) = 825 m2 

250 m2 is considered a small garden and is often referred too as being tennis court sized 

Many companies like Ryobi, Makita, Works, and Greenworks etc. now also market on a one battery fits a number of power tools so that you can buy a starter kits that come with batteries and then buy additional Body only tools that can utilise the same batteries. It's just a shame they don't reduce the body only down in price the UK as much as they do in the rest of the world.

Once you are hooked on a brand or actually their battery format it's very difficult not to take that ownership into consideration when looking to buy a new power tool of some description. 

One quickly learns that for use of any power tool for any reasonable duration that one needs to invest in an appropriate Ah battery. I became a "Ryobi One+ 18V Man" after testing my Brother-in-Laws circular saw using a 2Ah and a 4Ah battery and saw first hand the difference in power and duration of use. Thus I bought a starter kit with a better 4.0 Ah battery.  

Ryobi only sell their One+ 18V lawnmowers with 4.0 Ah and more recently as they have added larger Ah batteries to the range 5.0 Ah batteries and I'm truly stunned Greenworks are shipping their 24V and their 48V (24V=24V) range with 2Ah batteries and not something with a longer life span per charge. 

Again at then end of the day it really all depends on the actual area you have to cut with a mower. I have been trying to get figures from Greenworks for their different machines as these are not currently quoted on all pages for all their machines.  

3. Lawn Size and Condition

Which magazine tests each mowers ability to cope with Standard Grass, Long Grass, Rough Grass and Wet Grass, judging how tidily it cuts the grass and what it's like in different conditions. 

We all know that the first cut of the year in March/ April depending on the amount of rain is always the worst, and that the height is adjusted up as high as possible to allow airflow and for the lower levels of grass to dry out before lowering the height and cutting again.
    
Because of shortened battery life, cordless lawn mowers traditionally been only though  suitable for only small and medium-sized lawns, but what is actually considered a small or medium sized lawn?. If you own a large garden, then you should do more research and find a mower with a powerful battery and extended runtime adequate to cut the area you have on a single charge. 

If you are okay with taking breaks, then you can use a cordless mower over extensive gardens as well. Depending upon the make and model, you can choose up to 40 minutes of runtime for small or medium grounds. For more significant areas, you will need a battery backup of up to 2 hours.

If you want to include some breaks while maintaining a large lawn, then look for a cordless mower with a rapid charging feature or consider investing in an additional battery.

4. Weight               

Battery-powered mowers are lighter in general when compared to petrol mowers. However, if you suffer from a bad back or you are elderly then weight and manoeuvrability must be considered. Normally extra space is required for big footprint mowers that are not easy to fold up and store away.

5. Self-Propelled Features

Now, this is a feature that can make things easy here. If you are recovering from an injury, then a self-propelled mower can be the best to maintain your lawn or garden. They will move forward without your support; however, you need the strength to be able to guide them around the corners.

6. Cutting Width

Width of the blade is another factor that helps you choose a cordless lawnmower. Most of us make sad faces after seeing a low runtime, but it’s not bad news if the same mower has wide cutting blades. With a wide cutting blade, the mower will cover more area, and the mowing task will be completed in less time and energy. So a comparison of blade width, Runtime and Cut Area per charge needs to be considered. 

7. Storage Space

Storage is another vital factor to consider when buying a mower. If you don’t have too much space for storage, you should go for a rechargeable lawnmower that has vertical storage ability. A product like this can be folded up and stored upright saving you much space.

How much-reserved space you have to store a cordless lawnmower? Are you going to store it in a garage, or due to lack of space you are forced to take the cutting machine indoors; under the stairs or might be inside the cupboard. If you are running low on storage space, then you should check the dimensions of cordless lawnmowers.

In the list mentioned above, we have discussed several variants that have foldable handles. Once they are collapsed, you can store the machine in small places. On the other hand, if you own a large house and there is no need to think about space, you can check any of the above considerations.

8. Charging System

Most of the times, you will see that a cordless lawn mower has removable batteries. Removable battery means, you can charge it quickly indoors while not in use. Moreover, you can purchase a spare battery for virtually unlimited runtime.

9. Cutting Management

Cutting management is very essential for any cordless mower. You should check if the machine you want to buy has all the features that make mowing easier. Does it have mulching, bagging and side discharge functions? Does it have a self-propelled ability which will make your job easier and effective?

10. Ergonomics & Ease of Use

It is better to choose a product with an ergonomic handle so that convenience will be enhanced. A lot of rechargeable lawn mowers come with many easy-to-use features like a single lever, push-button start, fold-up storage and so on. You should choose a product that will give you the greatest convenience so that you will be able to get satisfactory results. 

For me it's a trade off between a lighter model 8.8 kg without a mulcher or a 18.5 kg machine with a mulcher. If I'm going to be humping this down to the allotment on a regular basis do I really want a machine that is twice as heavy but with a cutting width only 30mm wider than the model below and is less than half the weight?

11. Additional Features

Above we have discussed the essential features that need to be checked for an enjoyable mowing experience. However, there are many other traits of cordless mowers that can add that extra something to your mowing session. For instance, there are cordless mowers that can also work as a mulcher (Greenworks 36cm & 41cm models) or discharge the grass cuttings from one side. 

For me as an allotment owner who enjoys making his own compose the mulcher is a feature that gives me a tangible benefit. As I can throw my spent vegetation on the grass and get it compost bin ready really easily. I'm considering looking at if I could make a mulching plug for the smaller machine that the larger machine has, to get that additional feature.  

Then comes the battery and grass level indicator (Hyundai HYM60LI420), which keeps you informed about the ongoing process. We have discussed mowers that can automatically regulate power input for improved efficiency and runtime. It also an additional and useful feature that you can look. Example, Yard Force 108V cordless lawnmower has Torque-Sense Technology that manages the power according to the mowing conditions, which results in a long-lasting backup.

Cordless mowers do not always include the battery and charger. If you are purchasing a body only mower, make sure you already have a compatible battery. If you are investing in power tools, you should check whether the power accessories are included or you have to purchase them separately.

12 Customer Support and warranty              

We don’t have to look for support on a rechargeable lawn mower every week. However, everyone should be prepared for worst-case scenarios. If you need a maintenance technician or any internal part is not working, there should be various ways to contact the manufacturer. So, look for a mower that comes from an established brand with helpline and e-mail support. It’s even better if they have a live chat option. Example, Bosch has a hotline number and you can also contact them over e-mail.

Another essential point is the warranty. Cordless mowers are available with a guarantee of one year, three years and sometimes more. The guarantee on the battery may be a year less than the machine i.e. Greenworks provided 3 years on the machine but only 2 years on the batteries, so think which duration satisfies your mind, when finally making a choice.

Cordless Lawn Mowers - Buyers Guild Part 1





The Advantages and Disadvantages of Battery or Cordless Lawnmowers
With everything you purchase in life, it’s the Features & Benefit against the Cost that give you the final Incentive Merit that ultimately makes you decide either to purchase or to walk away from a certain product.
Below I have listed just some of the common Advantages & Disadvantages of a battery or Cordless lawn mowers that you should be aware off.
Advantages
Low sound level: rechargeable lawnmowers run on battery power, which is frictionless and produces minimal noise, Thus no need for ear defenders.
Less Vibration: significantly less vibration than petrol driven mowers  
Environment-friendly: The power system of cordless mowers is entirely electric, so they don’t emit dangerous exhaust.
Low maintenance: Because you don’t have a spark plug to replace, or carburettor to unblock or adjust or fuel lines that perish like petrol driven mowers.
Cost-effective: In the long run, cordless mower saves a lot of money that you could have invested in fuel and replacements parts.
No additional trips to pick up petrol or the need to store petrol in your house.
Easy to start: A cordless mower does not have a pull start like petrol mowers. There is a required knack required to start most petrol mowers. Almost all the battery-operated mowers come with a power button to start and shut down the machine.
Safety:  No power cable means that you don’t have to worry about accidently mowing over the cable and possibly electrocuting yourself to death.
Handling: Cordless lawn mowers are lightweight because they don’t have massive engines like petrol or corded mowers.
Storage: Cordless mowers often have a smaller footprint than corded and petrol mowers.

Disadvantages
Limited runtime: Cordless mowers are not suitable for more significant areas because of their restricted battery backup. If you need virtually unlimited runtime, then you have to need a purchase a spare battery.
Lack of power: A cordless mower is comparatively less powerful than a petrol mower.
Interrupted workflow: Once the battery is exhausted, the mower will stop. It will lead to downtime, and you have to wait until the batteries are recharged, unless you have additional batteries. With corded or petrol powered mowers, this is not the case because they don’t rely on temporary power.
It’s the reason why cordless mowers have historically only been normally suitable for small or medium-sized gardens. There is a solution to this at a cost.
Requires authorized service centres: You can maintain or service a petrol driven mower at your house. But, to fix an internal problem with a cordless mower, you have to visit its service centre, or you will need a certified technician.
Not suitable for very rough mowing conditions: Cordless lawn mowers will work best over even grounds. Once it comes to mow uneven terrains, gad propelled versions can overshadow both corded and cordless versions of lawnmowers.

Greenworks Cordless Mower Has Landed



Some time ago just before or as we started to become #IsolatedGardeners a public relations company sent out an email about a New 48V 36cm Cordless Lawn Mower from Greenworks and asked if there were any gardening journalist, vloggers and bloggers out there that would be interested in having a trial machine to review.

I replied immediately and a week or so later I was informed that I had been selected and that a trial machine would be coming my way.

The 48V 36cm Greenworks cordless mower was launched for £199 at the start of the UK season, it immediately sold out as sales had increased fourfold in just six weeks. It appears that everyone and his dog, who was now housebound started to get gardening crazy. As a result there was a delay in getting out the review machines to the gardening press as they had run out of stock.

Additional production was shipped in from Greenworks’ headquarters and thus the evaluation machines have finally arrived. It appears that the new stock is also still flying off the shelves, and Greenworks look to be having good 2020 due to the new interest in gardening, thanks to the virus.

I have wanted a Cordless Lawnmower for some time that I can take to the allotment to cut the main path at the bottom of my plot and the path between myself and my neighbour. .


I have been using a combination of woodchips & paving slabs for all the internal paths between the 2.4m x 1.2m beds, however obtaining a regular supply of woodchips is difficult.

Now I have the cordless mower the last section of my new plot shown above will have grass paths. This will have the benefit that I will not have refresh the paths every two to three years as they degrade and turn into soil.

At the moment I take my grass clippings from home and from my Sisters and Daughters properties to feed my composting Dalek army. Having grass paths will mean that I have an additional source of green material directly from the plot to compost. As gardeners and allotment plot holders we all know that one can never have too much compost.

I will do an unboxing review, and a full review of the Greenworks 48V 36cm Cordless Mower in due course, I need the grass to grow in the back garden and I have only just made a visit the the allotment since before the lockdown as my wife is in the very high risk category and it looks like the 2.2. Million vulnerable people in England will remain at home and shielded until at least the 1st August subject to what happens with any regional outbreaks or a second wave.

These are the tools that are available for you to select from. As can be seen there is a huge difference in the value of what you can claim, and quite frankly one would like to maximise the cost benefit of the promotion.

The cost of these tools ranges from £6:30 to £45.95 using the prices from CBS as a guide as there are no RRP Quoted on the Ryobi UK / Europe site only links to where you can purchase the item from. So realistically no one in their right mind would select the £6.30 Charger and why would one settle for a tool costing £24 when there are tools worth between £38 - £45

For allotment Holders who are going to need to maintain grass paths and have a garden buying a One+ Starter Kit and claiming the Grass Trimmer is ideal, what one needs to do is to decide which Starter Kit and where to get it from for the cheapest cost.

Now a couple of observations from my research, I have to ask why would anyone buy the RLM18C33B25 from Argos for £180 when you can get same lawnmower with a 4.0Ah Battery from Amazon for £163.67?

My choice (had I not already got the Grass Trimmer) would be to buy the RLM18X33H50 and although £10 cheaper from CPC I would more than likely get it from Homebase, it’s 99p cheaper than CBS and if picked up from the store you have eliminated the possibility of damage in delivery, which is a common problem these days.

£240.95 Worth of Tools for £199 RLM18X33H50 and the Ryobi OLT1825M on Christmas Promotion as a Free Gift worth  £41.95.

Now, I have been waiting for the price of the Ryobi OLM18X33H 18V ONE+ Cordless 33cm Lawnmower (Zero Battery) to drop below £ 129.95 CBS as I already have a Cordless Grass Trimmer that I bought from Homebase when they were closing down and managed to get one with a battery and charger for less than the cost of the battery and charger.

Unfortunately Ryobi bargains like that in the UK a few and far between, and it's sad when it's due to closure of a local store.

The current cost of a Body only (Zero Battery) Mower is

Hopefully Ryobi will re evaluate they pricing policy for zero battery models next year especially in the gardening Mower market looking at whats available above. There is a lot of competition out there and the one battery for all is now very common place, and it's a more level playing field and quite frankly Ryobi have lost the lead they once had. 




At the moment for me as an owner of the items above and a number of starter kits and batteries & Ryobi Grass Trimmer already the incentive merit to purchase a Body only model at the current cost is not there. 

I have been evaluating perhaps buying a mower starter kit from the above Ryobi list but would not want anything with less than a 4Ah Lion Battery.

I did muse purchasing the Ryobi RLM18X33B40 from Amazon for £163.67 and select a gift from what's left but there is nothing there that I have not already got and that I'm desperate to own. Then one worries that as this model is an end of line model that no other Retailer is selling it has been in the warehouse for some time and what shape is the battery in and how long is it likely to last. 

Umm I think I may wait for Argos to discover that their model is not selling and see if they half price it in the January sales because this promotion is going to do nothing for them if the end user looks at what's available. so for the moment it looks like I'm using the Ryobi Grass Trimmer I already have and the Manual Push Mower that I got off Freecycle on the allotment.
