Tasty Winter Purslane is a hardy green veg: sometimes called Miners Lettuce from the 1849 gold rush when it was a dietary staple. Sow between July and September, it likes a damp shady position, harvest the leaves throughout the winter for eating raw in a winter salad or steamed and served like spinach.

For Square Foot Gardening (SFG), you can plant 9 to 16 Winter Purslane (Claytonia perfoliata) plants per square foot, spacing them about 70 to 100mm ( 3 to 4 inches) apart in a grid pattern.
Square Foot Gardening Guidelines
- Spacing per plant: 7 to 10 cm (3 to 4 inches) apart.
- Number per square: 9 (spaced at 10 cm / 4 inches) or up to 16 (spaced at 7.5 cm / 3 inches) for a dense harvest of baby salad greens.
- Sowing depth: 0.5 to 1 cm (about 1/4 to 1/2 inch) deep.
