In My Seed Box For 2024 - Strawberries

Mr Fothergill's have sent me two new varieties of strawberries that they have added to their catalogue for 2024 these are Strawberry Marshmello A+ Grade Fruit Plants and Strawberry Allegro A+ Grade Fruit Plants. They are supposed to dispatch from the 21st February but they turned up at my front door on the 9th February, so I may have to put them in pots for a while until I get their new home ready on the allotment.

The Strawberry Marshmello A+ Grade Fruit Plants and Strawberry Allegro A+ Grade Fruit Plants both sell for £15.95 for 10 plants.

Mr Fothergill's web site says Strawberry Allegro A+ is really proving to be a fantastic variety, possibly the most vigorous and robust strawberry they have ever found! If you have poor soil or have grown strawberries on the same ground and cannot rotate then this is the variety for you - this variety was developed on the worst ground you can imagine and proved to be resistant to many soil borne diseases. With high sugar levels for sweetness and an excellent juicy flavour - its certainly one to find a spot for in your garden. Delivered as dormant bare rooted A+ grade plants.

Mr Fothergill's web site says exactly the same for Strawberry Marshmello A+ as it does for Strawberry Allegro A+

"This really is proving to be a fantastic variety, possibly the most vigorous and robust strawberry we have ever found!

Delivered as dormant A+ grade bare rooted plants."

But they have added the additional information below on the Strawberry Marshmello A+ web page

"A+ grade plants are grown through the summer months and covered with fleece in the beginning for added protection - only plants with a 15mm+ diameter size fall into this grade. The bare roots can be planted out as long as the ground is not frozen down to root level.

They are characterised by having very well developed root systems and, on average, will go on to produce 3-4 trusses per plant which in turn will help to generate more flowers and fruit - 400g+ of berries per plant! We trialled A+ grade plants against standard runners in our trials and were very impressed with the results - around 50% more berries were harvested from the A+ grade plants!"
