Mr Fothergill's - Longor Shallots New for 2024

Mr Fothergill's has added a long banana shallot called Longor to their catalogue for 2024. It has a superb, highly praised, robust flavour that is perfect in salads and casseroles,

With copper-coloured skins, each set produces a cluster of up to nine bulbs and stores well. Approx. 30 shallots per 500g pack, depending upon variety. The current cost of a 500g pack is £7.95

Shallots are small, golden-brown members of the onion family and have a sweet, delicate flavour and aroma. They are more subtle than onions but less pungent than garlic. The main bulb is made up of several smaller ones, which are split and dried at harvest time.

The distinctive shallot flavour can be used for cooking or pickling, they are an indispensable (and often undervalued) ingredient for any kitchen, lending their fresh flavour to everything from dressings, stocks, pies & quiches, with them also being delicate enough to eat raw and easy to roast to melt-in-your-mouth perfection.

Easy to grow, producing several shallots for summer harvesting. They take very little space and are guaranteed to repay your efforts with a bountiful crop.

Shallots and onions are of the same family and share many characteristics. Shallot bulbs are smaller and, once grown, tend to have a milder flavour than onions. They’re frequently used in French cuisine but are slightly trickier to peel, so perhaps this is why the onion remains more popular in the UK.

The main difference in the garden is that shallots form clumps of bulbs, whereas onions grow as individual bulbs. Regardless of this, they’re planted and grown in exactly the same way.
